Why You Need a Two Weeks Notice

The Difference Between a Two Weeks Notice and a Resignation Letter

If you’ve been researching how to best resign you might wonder about the difference between a good resignation letter and a two weeks notice.

There are a few key differences. A resignation letter states your intent to leave your job. The proper two weeks template tells your employer that you intend to leave your job in precisely 14 days.

Second, you can give your resignation letter without giving a two weeks notice. In the United States, employers cannot force you to give a two weeks notice. Yet, you will have to resign from your position in order to leave and find a new job.

What to Include with Your Two Weeks Notice

• Your manager’s name
• Your company’s address

Then, tell your employer you are giving your two weeks notice. Tell them the last day you plan to come to work. Make it exactly 14 days after the date you’re delivering the notice. You’ll not be able to stay at your job after that date. So, make sure you’ll have enough money after you leave your job.

If you want, you can tell your employer why you’re leaving. This information tells the employer that you don’t have any hard feelings toward the company and are just leaving to pursue something else. However, if you’re leaving because of a bad relationship with a boss or co-worker, you might not want to include this section. Then, include a section in which you express your gratitude for your old position. Mention any positive aspects of the job. If you didn’t like the position, show your gratitude for the things you learned.

Finally, tell your employer how you plan to help out before you leave. If possible, offer to train your replacement. Let them know that you’re open to answering any questions they might have.
